Looking for a good Jewish children's book?
Here are books for Jewish children - the little saplings growing up
around us olive trees. Many Jewish children's books focus on the holidays, and
of those, many focus on Hanukah. We have nothing against Hanukah, of course, but
it really is a relatively minor holiday on the Jewish calendar. Still, in
America, many parents find it necessary to give Hanukah a boost to compete with
that other winter holiday, and the books are good.
We humbly suggest you try some of the holiday books, and also browse around
to see what else might interest your child.
The good thing - well, one of the good things - about Jewish children's books
is that many of them come in series. If you have an avid reader at home, this is
no small matter. Find a good series, and you've found five or ten good books
that your Jewish child will like. The B.Y. Times series, some of which you'll see
below, is great for Jewish girls familiar with an observant lifestyle. The
K'Tonton series is a delightful set of books about a Jewish Tom Thumb.
In addition to stories, you can also find books of Jewish prayer and
religious themes for Jewish kids. There are now also good books on various
aspects of Jewish history suitable for children of different ages. While we've
put them here in the children's section, some of the first Hebrew books for kids
would do nicely for grownups who are just starting out and need help in building
a basic vocabulary.
In that light, we've included a few books on the Holocaust for
children. Though this is naturally a subject that you will need to introduce
thoughtfully to your children, it is also one that they will need to know. There
are several good books now that tell the story from children's perspectives.
Just make sure to pick age-appropriate books for your child.
As for Jewish parenting, we do have a
separate page devoted to the subject, but we couldn't resist including a few
books on raising Jewish kids here as well.
