It was the first klezmer album that excited me, and it generated enough excitement on its own to drag me deep into the revival scene. After a flurry of albums in the late 1990s, he stopped recording for several years. Brilliantly Played Chassidic Instrumental Music:
If you really want to hear Chassidic music, the last place to look is in a record store (no offense to Amazon -- but that's how it is!). The vocal music is alive and well, but it may be sampled only in its natural habitat -- the Stoliner tisch, or Bobov, or Modzitz, etc. Genuine Chassidic instrumental music is an even more elusive commodity. A very Beautiful CD:
This is Andy Statman's new CD that presents Instrumental interpretations of Niggunim of the Habad Hasidic movement. Andy uses either a trio or quartet here. On a majority of the material plays clarinet and a few of the latter cuts he plays mandolin. There is a very powefull emotion in Andy's clairinet playing and of course he is technically excellent.
