Miller rewards his rabid, insatiable fans, and the rest of us, with a clear two-hour recording that is a better document of his great band than 1997's Live & More. Sequenced just the way bootleggers like it--chronologically--Miller introduces almost every track and gives props to the burning soloists, like Dean Brown and his wild twangy guitar solo on "So What," or the very underrated Michael "Patches" Stewart straddling the upper reaches of his trumpet while trading eights with Brown and saxophonist Roger Byum on a rousing 12-minute version of "Scoop." The band stretches out on very long takes of Miller classics like "Panther" and "Cousin John," and a 20-minute medley of music Miller wrote for Miles Davis. Being an inventive arranger, cover tunes are a highlight of the bassist's records, and he reprises his homage to John Coltrane, "Lonnie's Lament" and adds "Killing Me Softly," and a very poignant version of "I Loves You Porgy." As on Live & More, vocalist Lalah Hathaway joins the group on "People Make the World Go 'Round" as well as on a very Crusaders-like Joe Sample tune. Anchoring it all is the amazing virtuoso musicianship of the man many feel is the best electric bassist in jazz. --Mark Ruffin

The best Marcus Miller CD...:
I have couple of Marcus Miller studio albums and I like them, but I find them a little bit too smooth. I saw him for the first time this summer, and was blown away by the energy and rawer sound which led me to buy this live album. And to my opinion the best Marcus Miller CD. It is modern electric jazz with great improvising, energetic, emotional, soulful and FUNKY. The sound is recorded straight off the mixing desk and left without any editing or mixing, it kept all the energy of a live gig. Get it!

"The Ozell Tapes" is a live album recorded on Marcus Miller's tour behind M2-- if you're not familiar with Marcus Miller's solo work, this is as good a place to start as any-- the majority of the material is drawn from "M2", with a few extra covers thrown in (mostly as features for vocalist Lalah Hathaway), a couple songs from "The Sun Don't Lie" and a medley of material Miller composed with Miles Davis. Perfect for my skydiving video !!!!!!!!!:
I do not play an instrument. BUT listening to this CD would convince me to start with the bass (with probably no hope of ever matching Marcus's skills) I own M2. This CD incorporates a number of the tunes with other material. Never have seen him live. Tunes like Power and Miles Davis's So What demonstrate some real breadth. However, my favorite tune and the one I used for the background of my skydiving video was Nikki's Groove. This whole CD will leave you yearning to see a live show. I can't wait to... more info

I love this album! Marcus Miller plays that bass so well and I like the way his band plays! Though it's only 16 songs, it makes up for it in performance. Even though it's a live album, it sounds great because it was recorded straight off of the mixing board. I am actually trying to play a couple of the songs on here because it sounds so bad and I also wanna play jazz!
