When I was in high school, we had a friend who listened to the Metropolitan Opera broadcasts every Saturday afternoon; and, we made fun of him.
Then, a few years passed; and in 1954 the Metropolitan came to our town on tour. My wife talked me into going with her. The opera was "Rigoletto," The artists, Roberta Peters, Robert Merrill, and Jan Peerce. Imagine a short, squat fifty-year-old portraying the scandalous Duke of Mantua! But somehow, the magic worked.
