Friday is "special" day in Miss Brown's class, when all of the kids bring in one of their favorie special things to share with the class. Peter brings in a strange looking plant called a Venus Fly Trap and Lu Mieu brings in a beautiful bright red kite from China. But Charlie can't think of anything that is special enough to bring to school, and his mom is too busy with his new baby sister to be of much help. Just when Charlie is feeling hopeless about school and left out at home, he makes an important discovery about just how special baby sisters - and big brothers - can be. A refreshing and satisfying look at familiar childhood experiences.

Perfect for new "big" brothers or sisters:
Something Special is a great book for children with recent additions to the family. It's the story of Charlie, a preschooler, whose life is complicated by his new baby sister, Sally. Although he keeps trying to find something special to bring for share day, his mother is too busy with Sally to help him. My son particularly liked it because Charlie gets angry, stomps his feet, and mutters things--and that's okay. Eventually, Charlie gets to bring the best thing of all for share day: his baby sister Sally.
