A great place to start:
This book is a great place to start if you want to get up to speed on the Middle East as it relates to Israel. Every issue is covered from Biblical times to the present day. The book is broken down in chapters that explain each issue and is very easy to understand, and it is packed with footnotes.

Every day when you watch the news some type of hostile action has taken place and it is difficult to get a handle on what the truth is and who is really at fault. This book gives a balanced viewpoint for both sides. Heavy reading though - makes one want to find something that is cheerful because the situation is depressing.
