Viva la Samuel Levine!:
An excellent book! I just wish that my friends raised in Judaism who are "Messianic Jews" (a movement which is about as Jewish as the Aryan Brotherhood), or other people born Jews who crossed over to the dark side--i.e., Christianity--had access to this book. Levine's scholarship is exemplary, tarnished only by his recourse to pettiness and patronization.
Great Title and the Author Makes His Case:
This book is very much need in these troubled times. If there is a religious figure knocking at your door, at least nine out of ten times it is a member of some Christian sect (and that's being generous. We know it's really ten out of ten). Rabbis simply do not go door to door seeking converts and lapsed Jews. A rationalist defense of Judaism is the last thing we need today. None of the three great monotheistic religions have much to offer without simple faith and beyond consolation: neither metaphysics nor morality of much value in themselves. Mr. Levine and you other amazonian reviewers, listen up! Spinoza covered all this megila long ago.
